Pada banyak kasus, banyak orang mau otomatis mematikan komputer/laptop dengan sistem operasi Linux yang dimiliki. Bagi kantor-kantor, ini sangat penting, karena akan mengurangi biaya listrik perusahaan, di perusahaan komputer-komputer yang digunakan bisa otomatis di-shutdown setiap jam 7.45 malam, dimana semua karwayan sudah pulang. Walaupun ada yang lupa mematikan komputer tidak masalah, karena akan otomatis shutdown sendiri.
Kita akan menambahkan 1 baris script di crontab, skrip ini sangat sederhana, yang dibutuhkan adalah pemahaman tentang contrab . Login sebagai root, eksekusi perintah
crontab -elalu dibagian paling bawah tambahkan
45 19 * * * /sbin/shutdown -h now
untuk melihat apakah crontab sudah terpasang atau belum
crontab -loutpunya kurang lebih
